Protecting Our Waters: Responsible Fish Waste Disposal

As fishermen and women, we all know the excitement of a successful catch. But once the thrill of reeling in that big fish fades, it’s time to clean and process it. While this is a normal part of the boating and fishing experience, it’s important to be mindful of how and where we dispose of the fish waste—especially when we’re in or around our Club’s docks.

It’s tempting to toss fish waste into the nearest body of water, and while this practice may seem harmless out on the open sea, it can have significant negative impacts in areas like marinas or yacht club docks. In these more confined spaces, fish waste can disrupt water quality and harm the local ecosystem. Here’s why proper disposal matters and how you can make a difference.

The Problem with Improper Disposal

Fish waste—comprising flesh, skin, bones, and entrails—doesn’t pose a major threat when disposed of in small quantities in open, circulating waters. In these settings, scavengers naturally feed on the waste, and it doesn’t harm the environment. However, in areas where water circulation is limited (like our dock areas), excess fish waste can cause a number of problems.

As fish waste decomposes, it depletes the water of oxygen, which is vital for marine life. This lack of oxygen can lead to poor water quality, reduced biodiversity, and even fish kills. Additionally, in warmer temperatures, the buildup of fish waste can create unpleasant odors that make our docks less enjoyable for everyone.

How You Can Help

We all have a role to play in keeping our waters clean and healthy. Here are some simple steps you can take to help protect the waters around BYC:

  • Use Eco-friendly Cleaning Stations: Whenever available, take advantage of fish cleaning stations designed to properly handle fish waste.
  • Clean Fish Offshore: If you’re out on the open water, clean your fish offshore and dispose of the waste in unrestricted waters.
  • Compost Fish Waste: Clean your fish at home and compost the waste instead of throwing it away.
  • Reuse Fish Parts as Bait: Freeze fish parts for reuse as bait, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in the water.
  • Lead by Example: Encourage other boaters and Club members to dispose of their fish waste responsibly.

By following these guidelines, we can help ensure that the waters around our Club remain clean and safe for everyone—whether you’re boating, fishing, or just enjoying the view.

Together, we can make a positive impact on our local environment and preserve the beauty of our waters for generations to come.
